Emalahleni Local Municipality will be hosting the District Heritage day in partnership with the Department of Sport Recreation Arts & Culture unveiling as Monuments & Heritage sites the
Tombstones of Luvuyo Lerumo & Qonda Hoho in Lady Frere Bowden village.

This partnership programme entail amongst other things implementation of the Heritage Month Activities in a manner that promotes unity, social cohesion and local economic development.

The heroes to be celebrated background in brief, “The student militancy generated by the Soweto uprising of 1976 led by students of Inkwanca High School in Queenstown to leave South Africa for military training. These included many rural youth who had come to Inkwanca to complete their studies. Two such were Qonda Hoho and Luvuyo Lerumo of Qoqodala who left on different times in the 1980’s. Qonda was a qualified teacher before leaving to join MK. Luvuyo escaped to Lesotho, and trained in Zambia, Angola and East Germany. They infiltrated South Africa on missions so secret that even their families did not know of their whereabouts. Luvuyo died in firefight between Fort Jackson and Breidbach. Qonda was betrayed by an informer and shot in Queenstown. Their burials were conducted in the presence of Hippo vehicles and strong security presence, allowing the attendance of only their family members”.
