Nomveliso Nyukwana is from a poor unemployed illiterate family which survived from small scale farming. She is grounded from being an educationist, an administrator and a politician. Her political background was developed from the student movement and later grown by labour movement.

She joined South African National Student Congress (SANSCO) which later became SASCO in entering the tertiary education at the age of 17 and served in the structures. She participated in “Ready to Govern” student movement sessions on discussion of the whether the education of our democratic era will have (by then) to be “reformed” or “transformed” when our democracy is achieved. Was a member of South African Democratic Teachers union [SADTU] and served in the SADTU and COSATU committee mainly in Gender desk. In 2001 she was appointed as a back-up negotiator for SADTU Northern Region in Eastern Cape. She represented Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) in the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. She led the formation of Lady Frere Women Writers in 2000.

She became actively involved in the activities of the African National Congress including student engagements with Chris Hani and the release Mandela Campaign and later became a member in of ANC in 1995. She has served in the ANC structures in the Chris Hani Region since then.

She joined local government as a part-time Councillor serving in the Finance Standing Committee and Municipal Public Accounts Committee; and she was afforded an opportunity to study Masters in Public Administration with specialisation in Local Government with the University of Fort Hare. This is her first term as the Mayor and a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Emalahleni.
